GPS based vehicle tracking system allows to easily track locations of multiple vehicles in a real time. It consists of a GPS device installed to the vehicle as well as software which collects the data and pictures vehicles’ locations on the screen. Apart from vehicle location GPS device can also send a real time data about vehicle’s condition and specific events which are set in the GPS device. For instance, one of the most commonly tracked events in public transport are doors (open/closed), ignition (on/off), vehicle’s speed.
Tracking online and offline
GPS tracking devices transmit a real time data to software via cellular (GSM) network. If connection is lost, data is stored in internal memory and transmitted when network becomes available. Modern vehicle tracking software allows to see and analyse data on desktop or laptop computers as well as on mobile phones and tablets.
The use of GPS tracking systems
Vehicle tracking system can be used for both heavy commercial vehicles as well as light commercial vehicles. GPS tracking for vehicles is widely used in logistics, however other companies also use it to track their own cars, ensuring that employees are not using them for their own, but only for business purposes. Other areas that actively use GPS tracking systems include public transport, car rental, perishable goods transportation, companies that use agriculture, building and other special machinery.
Developing technologies allow to collect more and more different kind of data about the vehicle or even its driver. Sophisticated tracking systems can generate insights about drivers’ behavior and even read on-board computer (CANbus) and digital tachograph data. GPS based vehicle tracking systems make it even possible to remotely block vehicle’s engines in case of emergency or security reasons.
Businesses also come up with new and creative ways of using online vehicle tracking. For instance, there are some luxury hotels which track their limousines in order to welcome VIP customers just upon their arrival.
Efficiency and productivity
One of the biggest advantages of GPS tracking systems is increased productivity and efficiency in transport related business operations. Ability to track commercial vehicles enables to precisely predict delivery times, inform customers about late delivery, changed delivery time or date in advance. Tracking fuel consumption allows business to calculate exact travel costs, warn drivers about their driving style, selected routes. Other businesses use GPS tracking to ensure discipline amongst company’s vehicles users, in this way saving operational costs. In general one thing about vehicle tracking systems is sure – in one way or another it saves time and money for business.
